SUMMARY:The myth of the "millionaire mindset": Experimental evidence from Filipino entrepreneurs
DESCRIPTION:Professor Dean Yang will talk about the recent paper\, “Aspirations and Financial Decisions: Experimental Evidence from the Philippines.” \nA randomized experiment among poor entrepreneurs tested the impact of exogenously inducing higher financial aspirations. In theory\, raising aspirations could have positive effects by inducing higher effort\, but could also reduce effort if unmet aspirations lead to frustration. Treatment resulted in more ambitious savings goals\, but nearly all individuals fell far short of reaching these goals. Two years later\, treated individuals had not saved more\, and actually had lower borrowing and business investments. Treatment also reduced belief in the amount of control over one’s life. Setting aspirations too high can lead to frustration\, leading individuals to reduce their economic investments. (from “Aspirations and Financial Decisions: Experimental Evidence from the Philippines”). \nSpeakers:\nDean Yang\, Professor of Public Policy and Economics

SUMMARY:Technological support for entrepreneurship among marginalized communities
DESCRIPTION:Online technologies are increasingly hailed as enablers of entrepreneurship and income generation. Recent evidence suggests\, however\, that even the best such tools disproportionately favor those with pre-existing entrepreneurial advantages and little is known about such technologies impact the day-to-day work of entrepreneurs in resource-constrained contexts. We present two studies. In one study\, we use participatory action research to investigate why this might be\, in an intimate\, close-up context.  We found from this investigation that in addition to technical requirements\, a range of non-technological efforts is needed to manage projects\, build self-efficacy\, and otherwise support community participants. Our findings offer a counterpoint to overgeneralized claims about well-designed technologies being able to address certain classes of social challenges. For our second study\, we performed a qualitative study involving interviews with 26 micro-entrepreneurs and observations of entrepreneurship events. We found that micro-entrepreneurs in Detroit are often pushed into entrepreneurship in response to unexpected life disruptions\, barriers to employment\, and desire to benefit the community. Their resource-constrained contexts shape how they use social technologies\, such as sharing economy tools and social media groups\, particularly with respect to privacy\, safety\, and professional agency. \nSpeakers:\nTawanna Dillahunt\, Associate Professor and Julie Hu\, Assistant Professor\, School of Information \nRSVP by noon Wednesday\, 9/30 to watch live

SUMMARY:Digital redlining in the fintech marketplace: Evidence from U.S. zipcodes
DESCRIPTION:Financial technologies—known as “fintech”—are arising as a mechanism for expanding access to financial services amidst banks’ parallel trends of shuttering brick-and-mortar branches and shifting product and services delivery to online and mobile platforms. These trends have potential to amplify the existing racialized geography of financial services in the United States and to exacerbate consumers’ marginalization from the financial marketplace. Leveraging 2015 Esri Business Analyst Market Potential data from the universe of high-poverty zip codes\, this paper investigates associations between communities’ racial makeup and rates of fintech. Poor Black and Brown communities experience a form of digital redlining by having the lowest fintech rates. For example\, every percentage increase in a community’s Black population was associated with an 18% decrease in their rates of high-speed internet access\, 1% decrease in smartphone ownership\, 12% decrease in online banking\, and 3% decrease in mobile banking. The relationships were opposite for communities with increasing White populations where—even amidst high poverty—Whiteness attracts higher rates of fintech. \n\n\n\nSpeakers:\n\n\n\nTerri Frieldline\, Associate Professor\, School of Social Work
