Bambini
Running a childcare business in Detroit means dealing with complicated regulations, licensing rules, staffing issues, and funding challenges—all while focusing on what matters most: the children and families you serve.
Every form, every deadline, every new policy adds more work to your already full plate. As a childcare provider, you’re not just teaching and caring for kids: you’re also managing payroll, tracking changing rules, and supporting families who count on you. Growing your business shouldn’t mean getting buried in paperwork. That’s why DNEP created Bambini, a tool made specifically for Detroit childcare providers—to help you stay on top of requirements and get back to doing what you do best.
The Story Behind Bambini
Bambini (Italian for “a small group of children”) was created by Michigan Law student Habib Saad (’26) during the summer of 2025. The AI bot is designed to make it easier for childcare businesses to navigate the complex rules that govern the industry.
Bambini was first developed on BoodleBox (an AI platform for building and hosting custom assistants) in consultation with childcare business experts and parents from First Children’s Finance, Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, the Ross School of Business, and other University of Michigan units, and piloted with 30 businesses in the Fall of 2025. The project was originated and overseen by DNEP managing director Christie Baer, who is also a Michigan attorney. It now lives on Maizey, a proprietary U-M GPT bot.
Bambini answers common regulatory law questions for childcare business owners in Detroit, including those considering entering the industry. Childcare providers often struggle with dense state regulations that can slow down business growth. Bambini makes this information accessible in plain language—from adult-to-children ratios to facility requirements—helping providers ensure compliance while focusing on their core mission of providing quality care.
“Exploring how legal AI can uplift small businesses has been an incredible endeavor. This project inspired me to pursue legal AI work after graduation, and to continue using innovation and creativity to serve communities,” said Saad.
Who Bambini Helps
Bambini serves primarily as a resource for current childcare providers seeking regulatory guidance and entrepreneurs looking to enter the childcare industry. By simplifying access to regulatory information, the bot helps remove barriers to entry and operation in this essential business sector.
Whether your dream is to start a daycare in your home, expand from your home to a center, or open multiple locations, Bambini can help answer your questions.
