U-M helping Detroit’s small businesses locate, navigate coronavirus-related financial aid

The University of Michigan is working with Detroit’s small businesses to help them find sources of federal financial aid amid the COVID-19 pandemic and assist them in navigating the rules and regulations they will encounter in the application process.
The Ford School of Public Policy’s Center on Finance, Law and Policy, through its Detroit Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Project, has compiled resources business owners need to access the roughly $375 billion in grants and loans earmarked for small businesses in the $2 trillion stimulus package signed into law last month.

With a statewide shelter in place order in effect in Michigan, small businesses in Michigan are being forced to pivot or seek emergency/disaster funding to survive. 
In support of the University of Michigan’s Detroit Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Project, the Center on Finance, Law & Policy will be releasing a series of resources to help business owners. The first resource was released today, which is simply a guide to help businesses update their listings on Google.

Two weeks ago, 22 students from the Law School, the Ross School of Business, and the Stamps School of Art & Design plus 10 faculty members from those same schools gathered in an unremarkable Ross classroom for what is the beginning of a remarkable experience: the launch of a new interdisciplinary clinic at the University of Michigan known as the Detroit Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Project (DNEP).

Ross accounting students offer free office hours on Fridays, expand Detroit Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Project

Solid financials are the backbone of any small business, but getting a business’ books in order is no small task. Since March 9, accounting students from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, working under faculty supervision, have been filling a need by offering free office hours for small businesses on Friday afternoons. Detroit entrepreneurs can sign up for free one hour appointments at the UM-Detroit Center, and get advice and assistance on topics ranging from chart of account and inventory setup to analysis of various revenue streams.

Stamps students join Detroit Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Project

Students from the University of Michigan’s Penny Stamps School of Art and Design spent a part of their summer in the city of Detroit, gaining valuable experience as interns in the Detroit Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Project (DNEP) + Impact Studio for Local Business internship program.
From May 4 to June 24, they joined forces with the Ford School, Ross School of Business, and the School of Information. Stamps Career Development contributed part of the internship costs, ensuring that students were compensated for their work with undercapitalized small businesses.

The University of Michigan’s Center on Finance, Law, and Policy (CFLP) is pleased to announce the launch of a new website specifically for the Detroit Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Project (DNEP). The new site showcases the full breadth of programming DNEP offers year-round and aggregates a number of free digital resources for entrepreneurs. It better describes how small businesses and students can get involved in semester-long consulting courses, an internship program, free 1:1 accounting services, and free 1:1 technology training and support.

Clients wanted to work with interdisciplinary teams of U-M students this summer

Beginning May 4, the University of Michigan’s Detroit Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Project (DNEP) will offer free services to Detroit small businesses and non-profits through its DNEP +Impact Studio for Local Business 2022 (DNEP +ISLB) internship program. DNEP +ISLB is a pro bono implementation-focused program for Detroit neighborhood-based businesses that need talent and capacity to activate something challenging in their business. DNEP hires a team of 18 U-M undergraduate students, guided by business and design faculty and DNEP staff, to implement marketing and operations projects. Students work with businesses in intense bursts of 1-2 weeks from start to finish.
