DNEP cited as U-M is rated #8 in the country for “Best Undergrad Programs for Entrepreneurs”

The Detroit Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Project (DNEP), which brings together small businesses with University of Michigan students, faculty and staff to solve business owners’ legal, financial, marketing, operational, and design challenges, was cited among other U-M programs in a Princeton Review-Entrepreneur magazine ranking of the “Top 50 Best Undergrad Programs for Entrepreneurs in 2022.” U-M ranked #8, and #2 in the Midwest, noting, “U-M’s entrepreneurship offerings include interdisciplinary courses, programs, student organizations, and events that incorporate partnerships with startups and innovative ventures. This approach pushes students to apply their learning outcomes to current real-world problems.”

Detroit neighborhood businesses blooming after tapping U-M expertise

Nawal Denard knows the quality of the hand-crafted clothing, jewelry and shoes from her native Ghana in West Africa, and she is proud to sell these dynamic textiles through her Detroit-based business, House of African Prints.
What she didn’t know, however, was marketing. Her success at pop-up shops gave her the inspiration to search for help. To build her business in a sustainable way, Denard applied and was accepted to the Detroit Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Project, a program that brings together the University of Michigan’s students and professors to help entrepreneurs working in the city’s neighborhoods.

Detroit Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Project Student Teams Present Their Work to Clients, Faculty, and Students

On December 18, Detroit Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Project (DNEP) interdisciplinary student teams from the Ross School of Business, Law School, and Stamps School of Art and Design presented their final summaries and recommendations to their Detroit clients, fellow students, and faculty members. Their DNEP experience provided the first opportunity for Design and Accounting students to attend class together every week as well as participate in all school meetings.  The result was a more integrated sets of recommendations for their Detroit clients. Detroit neighborhood entrepreneurs project looking for a few more business students

The Detroit Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Project, an interdisciplinary clinic that pairs Detroit neighborhood-based businesses with students from the Ross School of Business, Law School, and Stamps School of Art & Design is looking for a few more students from the Ross School for its second semester pilot. Students receive 2-3 credits as independent study research hours under the direction of Professor Cathy Shakespeare. The program is funded by JPMorgan Chase Foundation and M Cubed.
