Marcus D. Harris

Business Strategy

Dr. Marcus Harris is a full-time Lecturer in Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Dr. Harris is a practitioner-scholar whose research interests include social entrepreneurship and social innovation, urban entrepreneurship and microenterprise development, and nonprofit
management and leadership. He has taught courses in entrepreneurship, management, and strategy for the past 14 years at institutions including Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD), Oakland
University, Lawrence Technological University, and U-M Dearborn. He has also guest lectured and presented his research at various universities and conferences across the country. Dr. Harris currently
serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship, and he takes great delight in mentoring and advising his students.


In addition to his academic career, Dr. Harris also serves as an entrepreneur trainer and coach for various community-based neighborhood microenterprise development programs in inner-city Detroit. He is also a partner member of the Detroit Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Coalition, a
consortium of organizations who provide financial assistance and capacity building to small businesses and neighborhood improvement initiatives.


Dr. Harris also has over 20 years of professional experience in corporate information technology (IT) management, nonprofit management, and small business consulting. He received a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree from Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, MI. He also holds Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees from the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.


A Detroit native, Dr. Harris lives in the city with his eight year-old daughter, Violet. In his spare time, Dr. Harris enjoys volunteering in the community, spending time with Violet in downtown Detroit, and cheering on his favorite Detroit professional sports teams (Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings, and Lions) and his college teams (Michigan Wolverines).
